8SZ The Austrian Lake District

After the welcome briefing and the handover of the bikes, we set off for a city walk through Salzburg.

Nach dem Welcome Briefing und der Übergabe der Räder machten wir uns auf zu einem City Walk durch Salzburg.

Auf jeder Edelweiss Tour passiert irgendetwas unvorhergesehenes. Ich frag mich oft vor Tourbeginn - was wird es wohl diesmal sein? Manchmal ist es etwas lustiges, meistens ist es nicht so lustig. Diesmal war es sehr überraschend. Wir haben unsere Gäste aus Salzburg hinaus zum Startpunkt am Wallersee geshuttelt. Sonntag morgen um 9.15 h. Polizeikontrolle - Fahrzeugkontrolle - und noch besser ein Alkoholtest. Soviel zum Start.

Dann ging es los - 5 Seen, herrliche Landschaft, perfektes Wetter, deftiges Mittagessen und zum Schluß noch eine ziemliche Anstrengung. 

Sehr erwähnenswert ist die sportliche Leistung der Gruppe - 80 km, 1000 Höhenmeter und wir waren um 16 h!!! im Hotel - einfach super.

On every Edelweiss tour something unforeseen happens. I often ask myself before the tour starts - what will it be this time? Sometimes it's something funny, most of the time it's not so funny. This time it was very surprising. We shuttled our guests out of Salzburg to the starting point at Wallersee. Sunday morning at 9.15 h. Police check - they checked the papers, the van, pretty much everything  - and even better Juri had to do an alcohol test. So much for the beginning on a sunday morning.

Then we started - 5 lakes, beautiful scenery, perfect weather, delicious lunch and finally a sportive challenge.

Very worth mentioning is the sporty performance of the group - 80 km, 1000 meters of altitude and at 4 p.m.!!! we were at the hotel - simply super.

Herrliches Wetter, perfekte Temperaturen, alle fit und ausgeruht - los gehts! Unser Hotel in Fuschl verlassen wir mit einem weinenden Auge. 6 km sind es bis zur Fähre nach St. Gilgen. Wir setzen über nach St. Wolfgang, mit dem bekannten "Weißen Rössl". Der Radweg geht entlang des Wolfgangsees und der Ischl nach Bad Ischl. Ein Anstieg geht hinauf ins Weißenbachtal und hinunter zum Attersee. Aber halt, das ist noch ein wichtiger Stopp - das Picknick! Für die Unverwüstlichen geht es hoch hinauf zum Skigebiet Hochlecken mit herrlichen Blicken, sowohl über den Attersee als auch auf der anderen Seite zum Traunsee. Gmunden und der Hois`n Wirt sind unser Ziel für heute. Und ein Bad im frischen Traunsee ist zum Abschluß Pflicht.  89 km - 1.060 Höhenmeter!!

Wonderful weather, perfect temperatures, everyone fit and rested - off we go! We leave our hotel in Fuschl with a teary eye. It is 6 km to the ferry to St. Gilgen. We cross over to St. Wolfgang, with the famous "Weißes Rössl". The cycle path goes along the Wolfgangsee and the river Ischl to Bad Ischl. An ascent goes up to the Weißenbachtal and down to the Attersee. But wait, that's another important stop - the picnic! For the invincible, it goes high up to the Hochlecken ski area with magnificent views, both over the Attersee and on the other side to the Traunsee. Gmunden and the Hois`n Wirt are our destination for today. And a swim in the fresh Traunsee is obligatory at the end. Today we had 89 km and 1.060 meters to climb.

Die Fähre die uns nach Ebensee bringt, hält genau vor unserem Hotel. Entlang der Traun geht es nach Bad Ischl und die Kaiservilla ist unser erster Stopp, ein ausgiebiger zweiter folgt - das Cafe Zauner an der Traun mit seinen süßen Köstlichkeiten. Der malerische Weg am Ostufer des Hallstätter See ist teilweise in den Fels gemeißelt und verlangt etwas technisches Können. Das Beinhaus in Hallstatt ist ein bisschen gruselig, aber einmalig. Und dann geht es hoch zum Gosausee, der vom Dachstein Massiv umrahmt in der Abendsonne glänzt.  Was für ein Tag....

The ferry that takes us to Ebensee stops right in front of our hotel. Along the Traun River we head to Bad Ischl and the Kaiservilla is our first stop, an extensive second one follows - the Cafe Zauner on the Traun with its sweet delicacies. The picturesque path on the eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt is partly carved into the rock and requires some technical skill. The bonehouse in Hallstatt is a bit creepy, but unique. And then it's up to Gosausee, framed by the Dachstein massif, gleaming in the evening sun.  What a day....

Der Morgen beginnt mit einem Anstieg zum Pass Gschütt. Der Turbo Mode ist angesagt. Majestätisch zeigt sich das Dachsteingebirge, meist noch schneebedeckt. Entlang der Lammer geht es nach Voglau. Wir haben nochmals einen Anstieg vor uns, der sich lohnt. Dort oben auf der Ostseite des Tennengebirges scheint die Welt noch in Ordnung. Kuhglockengeläute, Vogelgezwitscher, einzelne Bauernhäuser und blühende Wiesen. Es geht einige Höhenmeter hinauf. Herrliche Blicke ins Tal und auf die Gebirgskette sind der Lohn. 10 km geht es immer abwärts nach Bad Vigaun, in unser wunderschönes Hotel Langwies. Wir ziehen uns um und das Begleitfahrzeug bringt uns zum Kehlsteinhaus, Hitlers Sommerresidenz in absolut einmaliger Lage. 

The day starts with an ascent up to pass Gschütt. Majestic views over the Dachstein mountain range is our reward. Along the river Lammer we reach Voglau. And up again it goes! All`s right with the world up there: cow bells ring, birds sing, lonely farmhouses along the way and blooming meadows. Beautiful views down into the valley and the Tennen mountain range. At the top you should put your windbreakers on, because we`ll kind of fly down the next 10 km to Bad Vigaun. We will arrive early at our hotel. We change quickly before the shuttle brings us up to "Eagles nest", Hitlers summer residence, in an absolute spectacular location. 

Es gibt viele Optionen für den heutigen Tag und die Entscheidung fällt schwer. Die Burg Hohenwerfen ist fast um die Ecke und hat eine beeindruckende Falknerei. Also entschieden wir uns für die Falkenshow.

We have lots of options today and picking one might be hard. The castle Hohenwerfen is just around the corner and has an impressive falconry - so decision was made quickly.

Jetzt wirklich? Ist es wirklich schon der letzte Tag? Aber auch heute gibt es paar unvergessliche Highlights und sicher auch nochmal ein Schnitzel.

Es war das Salz, das der Stadt zu einem Teil ihres Namens verhalf. Und es war das Salz, das Salzburg reich und mächtig machte. Die Salzmiene in Hallein ist unser morgendliches Highlight.  Auf dem Salzach Radweg bewegen wir uns dann Richtung Salzburg. Immer an der Salzach entlang, super schön. Bevor wir die Mozartstadt erreichen, werden wir uns aber noch in Schloss Hellbrunn vergnügen. Hellbrunn war Kulisse für "The Sound of Music". 

Obwohl es manchmal harte Anstiege waren und lange Fahrtage,  glaube ich ihr werdet die friedliche Stimmung, die grandiose Landschaft, die blauen Seen, die schroffen Berge, das Kuhglockengebimmel und natürlich die Gruppe vermissen.

Really now? Is it really the last day already? But even today there are a few unforgettable highlights and certainly another schnitzel.

It was the salt that gave the city part of its name. And it was the salt that made Salzburg rich and powerful. The salt mine in Hallein is our morning highlight.  We then move towards Salzburg on the Salzach cycle path. Always along the river, super beautiful. Before we reach the Mozart city, however, we will enjoy Hellbrunn Palace. Hellbrunn was the backdrop for "The Sound of Music". 

Although there were sometimes hard climbs and long driving days, I think you will miss the peaceful atmosphere, the magnificent scenery, the blue lakes, the rugged mountains, the cowbells ringing and of course the group.
