SPE22004 - The Kingdom of Fjords and Glaciers

Norway - here we come! Bergen, Norway's 2nd-largest city, is the perfect location for our tour start. Before we explore the beautiful countryside of fjords, glaciers and mountains, we can enjoy one evening of city life. Lots of cute little shops, the famous fish market and of course the UNESCO site of Bryggen invite us for a little city walk. A great dinner in a typical Norwegian restaurant - and we are ready for our fantastic bicycle tour through Europe's north!

Norwegen - wir kommen! Bergen, Norwegen's zweitgrößte Stadt, ist der ideale Ausgangspunkt für unsere Tour. Bevor wir die herrliche Landschaft der Fjorde, Gletscher und Berge erkunden, genießen wir noch einen Abend im Stadtleben. Viele kleine Geschäfte, der berühmte Fischmarkt und natürlich das Weltkulturerbe Bryggen laden zum Stadtbummel ein. Noch ein hervorragendes Abendessen in einem typisch norwegischen Restaurant - jetzt sind wir bereit für eine fantastische e-bike-Tour durch Europa's Norden.

We are on our way! Wonderful blue skies overhead Bergen, the perfect start to our tour. We start out with a short ride to the train station. Here we take the train out of the city, towards Dale. Even the train ride is a beautiful experience, a great mix of mountain and lake scenery. In Dale we leave the train - and are immediately grateful that we have e-bikes...the small and twisty roads just climbs and climbs towards the blue horizon. Once we reached the high plateau - after several stops to admire some breathtaking waterfalls - the pedaling becomes a lot easier. We cruise along gorgeous lakes, until we finally reach the end of the plateau and roll downhill. At the next lake, we see the Edelweiss van - and Armin, who has prepared  a wonderful picnic for us. Just after we left the picnic spot, the rain started - time to start heading straight to our destination, Voss. What a great day - and there are a lot more ahead of us!

Wir sind unterwegs! Ein herrlicher blauer Himmel über Bergen ist die perfekte Kulisse für unsere Abfahrt. Wir beginnen mit einem kurzen Trip zum Bahnhof, von wo aus wir die Stadt in Richtung Dale verlassen. Selbst die Zugfahrt ist schon ein Erlebnis, herrliche Seen und Berge begleiten uns. In Dale steigen wir aus und um auf die Räder - und schon sind wir froh, dass wir auf e-bikes unterwegs sind. Die kleine, kurvige Straßen klettert unnachgiebig in Richtung des blauen Horizontes. Nachdem wir das Hochplateau erreicht haben, wird das radeln wesentlich entspannter. Wir rollen entlang von herrlichen Seen, bis wir am Ende der Hochebene die lange Abfahrt vor uns haben. Am Ende der Abfahrt wartet der nächste See auf uns - und Armin, der ein herrliches Picknick für uns vorbereitet hat. Kurz nachdem wir das Picknick verlassen haben, beginnt es zu regnen - zum Glück sind wir bereits kurz vor unserem heutigen Ziel, Voss. Was für ein Tag - zum Glück liegen noch viele solche Tage vor uns!

The beautiful day with almost cloudless weather started in Voss. After a short drive along Lake Vangsvatnet, we turn off towards Mjølfjell. After a beautiful drive along the deep blue Kleivelvi river and numerous waterfalls, we reach the train station of the same name. We had to take the train because the highest point of the day in Myrdal was only accessible through a railway tunnel. After a short break for lunch, we made our way down to Flam. On 21 gravel turns at first, we headed towards the valley before we reached our hotel directly at the Aurlandsfjord.

Climbing more than 4000 ft before lunch - can that be fun? Yes, it can - if you are riding an e-bike and if you are climbing above the shores of Aurlandfjord! That's exactly what we did this morning - and the views more than made up for our effort. On our ascend, we had to stop again and again to take photos of the incredlble scenery of Aurlandfjord. As we climbed above the treeline, the landscape changed completely. Snowfields, bare rocks and pristine lakes dominated the landscape. And what a change again when we reached Laerdal after a long ride down into the valley.

After lunch we had to pass two long tunnels, we decided to load the bikes into the van. We unloaded just short of our destination, Sogndal, on the famous Sognefjord - Norway's longest fjord.

Mehr als 1000 Höhenmeter auf dem Fahrrad vorm Mittagessen - kann das Spaß machen? Ja - wenn man ein e-bike fährt und die Berge am Aurlandfjord hinauffährt. Genau das haben wir heute morgen gemacht - und die Ausblicke waren jede Anstrengung wert. Wir mussten immer wieder anhalten, um Fotos von der unglaublichen Landschaft zu machen. Nachdem wir oberhalb der Baumgrenze waren, änderte sich die Natur vollkommen. Schnee, blanke Felsen und kristallklare Seen prägen hier oben die Landschaft. Und kaum erreichten wir Laerdal nach einer langen Abfahrt, hatte sich die Szenerie schon wieder vollkommen geändert.

Nachdem Mittagessen mussten wir durch zwei lange Tunnel fahren, daher entschieden wir uns, die Fahrräder in den Van zu laden. Kurz vor unserem Ziel, Sogndal, stiegen wir aber noch einmal auf die Räder, um entlang des Sognefjords, Norwegen's längstem Fjord, zu radeln.

Along the longest ice-free fjord in the world, the Sognefjord, we drive in sunshine to Hella. There the ferry is already waiting to take us on one of the most beautiful boat trips in the Fjaerlandfjord to the town of the same name. Along the way we see numerous waterfalls cascading into the fjord. The impressive Bøyabreen glacier grows ever larger. After arrival, we visit the Norwegian Glacier Museum and learn more about the white giants.

The kingdom of fjords and glaciers - that's the name of this tour. And that's exactly what we were discovering today. We woke up to a wonderful blue sky (once again, and yes, we really are in Norway!) and gathered some strength at a wonderful breakfast buffet with a huge selection of homemade products. Then we took the support van, as we had to pass through another one of Norway's endless tunnels. Afterwards we got on our bikes and started another climb over Norway's endless mountains. Cruising down on the other side we were soon greeted by the pristine Innvikfjord. After a short lunch stop, we had to put on our rain gear again - a light rain shower accompanied us to our hotel on the fjord. We decided to leave the bikes in the garage and take the van up to Briksdalsbreen glacier - like I said before: we are in the kingdom of fjords and glaciers.

Das Köngreich der Fjorde und Gletscher - so heißt diese Tour. Und genau das sollten wir heute entdecken. Wieder erwachten wir unter einem strahlend blauen Himmel (ja, wir sind wirklich in Norwegen) und stärkten uns an einem herrlichen Frühstücksbuffet bestehend aus einer riesigen Auswahl lokaler Produkte. Da wir wieder einen Tunnel durchqueren mussten, fuhren wir das erste Stück heute im Van. Anschließend setzten wir uns auf die Räder - und erkletterten wieder eine von Norwegens zahllosen Bergketten. Auf der Abfahrt begrüßte uns schon der herrliche Innvikfjord. Nach einer kurzen Mittagspause mussten wir tatsächlich unsere Regenjacken anziehen - ein leichter Schauer begleitete uns zu unserem Hotel am Fjord. Wir beschlossen, unsere Fahrräder in der Garage zu parken, und stattdessen mit dem Van zum Briksdalsbreen Gletscher zu fahren - wie gesagt: wir sind im Königreich der Fjorde und Gletscher.

Today's the day: we will finally see the world famous UNESCO world heritage site Geirangerfjord. The weather forecast predicted light rain all day - and it rained when we started our trip to Hellesylt to reach the ferry that would take us to Geiranger. But after an hour, and after our first hill of the day, the rain stopped and the sun came out - another gorgeous day in Norway. We had a wonderful coffee stop, in a shop which was half a café and half a store for wool and and woolen products - shopping time! Now we climbed up hill number two, this time in bright sunshine. We descended down to Hellesylt, where we took the ferry into the Geirangerfjord - after lunch, of course. As soon as the ferry took off, the rain started again and we were a bit worried if we would be able to see the beauty of the famous fjord. But after 15 minutes the rain stopped, and just in time the sun came out again. After adding about 100 more waterfalls to our collection, we eventually reached Geiranger, our last stop before we reach our destination, Alesund, tomorrow.

Es ist soweit - heute sehen wir endlich den berühmten Geirangerfjord! Die Wettervorhersage sagte den ganzen Tag über leichten Regen voraus - und tatsächlich regnete es, als wir unsere Tour zur Fähre nach Hellesylt begannen. Aber nach einer Stunde und dem ersten Berg des Tages hörte es auf zu regnen und die Sonne zeigte sich, ein weiterer herrlicher Tag in Norwegen. Wir stoppten in einem kleinen Café, in dem es nicht nur Kaffee, sondern auch die berühmte norwegische Wolle sowie Produkte aus Wolle gab - Zeit für etwas shopping. Anschießend wartete Berg 2 auf uns, diesmal in strahlendem Sonnenschein. Dann ging es hinab nach Hellesylt, wo - natürlich nach dem Mittagessen - die Fähre in den Geirangerfjord auf uns wartete. Sobald wir losfuhren, begann es wieder zu regnen, und wir machten uns schon etwas Sorgen, ob wir den Geirangerfjord überhaupt richtig sehen würden. Aber nach 15 Minuten war der Schauer durchgezogen, die Sonne kam heraus, und wir konnten etwa hundert Wasserfälle zu unserer Sammlung hinzufügen. Schließlich erreichten wir Geiranger, unserem letzten Stop, bevor wir morgen unser Ziel in Alesund erreichen.

The last stage of the tour starts in Geiranger, at our hotel right at the end of the fjord. The day started with the highlight of the day. 11 hairpin turns high above the Geiranger Fjord. The so-called "Eagle Road" offers a wonderful view of the famous fjord even in changeable weather. During the rest of the day, we were again impressed by the breathtaking nature of Norway. Rain and wind became increasingly stronger on our way to Alesund. But anyone who wants to say they've been cycling in Norway has to have ridden in the rain once. Nevertheless, good mood and fun were obviously present until the end. At the final dinner in the harbour of Alsund we shared our impressions of the wonderful and impressive tour.
