The Alpe-Adria Bicycle Trail is one of the most beautiful and popular cycling routes not only in the Alps, but in all of Europe. It connects Salzburg, located on the northern edge of the Alps, with Grado on the Italian Adriatic coast. We will cycle the southern half of this unique route on this fantastic tour.
We begin in the Austrian village of Velden, whose picturesque location at Lake Wörth immediately captivates us. Our first riding day already takes us to Italy, where we spend a night in Tarvisio. Surrounded by the Karawanks and the Triglav massif, we continue and follow the Val Canale along one of the most beautiful sections of the cycle path. Of course, we occasionally leave it to make detours, as there is an endless amount to see and experience in Friuli, Italy’s northeasternmost province. We indulge in the famous San Daniele ham and then leisurely roll down to the sea. The Alpe-Adria Cycle Path officially ends in Grado, but we make our way north again—not without dipping our feet in the water and enjoying the Italian flair!
Our route also takes us to Gorizia, a fascinating border town where Italy meets Slovenia. Together with its Slovenian neighbor Nova Gorica, it was named the European Capital of Culture 2025. The two towns symbolize a united Europe, where a border that once divided people has become a place of cooperation and friendship.
Next stop: the world-famous Postojna Cave in Slovenia. One of the largest and most spectacular karst cave systems in the world.
We do not drive by Ljubljana, which is often regarded as one of Europe's greenest and most livable capitals. Its picturesque old town, lively riverside cafés, elegant bridges, and the hilltop castle create a relaxed atmosphere that is perfect for an evening stroll.
Our final destination is Lake Bled, surrounded by the Julian Alps and famous for its emerald-green lake, tiny island church, and medieval cliff-top castle.
