RUGGED MOUNTAINS, CRYSTAL-CLEAR LAKES, AND DOLCE VITA ON THE COAST.

The Alpe-Adria Bicycle Trail is one of the most beautiful and popular cycling routes not only in the Alps, but in all of Europe.
It connects Salzburg, located on the northern edge of the Alps, with Grado on the Italian Adriatic coast. We will cycle the southern half of this unique route on this fantastic tour.
We start in the Carinthian capital Klagenfurt, head to Italy on the very first day, and follow the Val Canale on one of the most beautiful sections of the cycle path. Of course, we leave it sometimes and make side trips, after all, there is so much to see and experience in Friuli, the most northeastern province of Italy. We feast on the famous ham of San Daniele and then coast leisurely and comfortably down to the sea. In Grado the Alpe-Adria cycle path ends, while we set off north again. But not without dangling our feet in the water and enjoying the Italian flair!
The way back takes us via Goricia to Postojna, where we admire the world-famous caves, and on to the capital Ljubljana, which delights us with its picture-perfect old town. One more night at the enchanting lake of Bled, then we cross the Karavanke mountains and are back in Austria. At the end of this trip you will understand why the Alpe Adria Cycle Route is so highly rated.

Travel schedule

Day 1: Arrival in Klagenfurt
Welcome to Klagenfurt! We meet at 4 pm in our hotel for our Welcome Briefing.

Day 2: Klagenfurt - Tarvisio
Just beyond Klagenfurt lies Lake Wörthersee, Carinithia's largest and certainly most famous lake. We follow its shores and ride west first, then south, towards Italy, Friuli to be exact. The destination is the small, ancient town of Tarvis, only recently named Tarvisio, where there are still four official languages. History comes alive here.

Day 3: Tarvisio - Fagagna
Today, one of the most beautiful stretches of the entire Alpe-Adria Cycle Route awaits us: the Val Canale, where a former railroad line has been converted and now delights cyclists.

Day 4: Fagagna - Grado
This rather long day takes us past the Friulian capital of Udine down to the sea, and to one of the most beautiful places on the entire Adriatic coast. Grado is located on an island and has many historical sights and beautiful beaches. Here you can really relax and unwind. Grado is the terminal point of the famous Alpe-Adria bike path.

Day 5: Grado - Gorizia (Goricia)
This short day leads us to Goricia and the Italian-Slovenian border. In the twin town of Goricia - Nova Gorica history becomes tangible, because until 2004 the Iron Curtain ran right through it. Since its end, the town has visibly revived; in 2025 it will be the European Capital of Culture.

Day 6: Gorizia (Goricia) - Postojna
We carry on and ride through the Ternovan Forest and past a spectacular castle to Postojna, in German Adelsberg. This place is world famous for its stalactite caves, which you can explore aboard a small train (!). What an experience!
