8CF2101 The Heart of Southern France

We are in Clermont Ferrand, Michelin city, capital of the Auvergne. The city is also called the black city as many buildings are made from the black rock Volvic.  The black cathedral Notre-Dame- de-l’assumption is an especially impressive example of that. 

Wir befinden uns in Clermont Ferrand, Hauptstadt der Auvergne. Die Stadt wird auch "Schwarze Stadt" genannt, da viele Gebäude aus dem dunklen Vulkangestein der Umgebung gebaut wurden. Die schwarze Kathedrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption ist ein besonders eindrückliches Beispiel dafür.

Alles ist bereit, wir freuen uns auf das gemeinsame Welcome Briefing. Leider vermissen wir einen unserer Kunden, der am New Yorker Flughafen aufgrund des starken Regens hängen geblieben ist. Wir hoffen, er ist bald bei uns. Alles Gute, Howard!

Day 2: Clermont-Ferrand - Salzuit

Wir übernehmen unsere Fahrräder 20 km außerhalb von Clermont Ferrand. Hier bahnt sich der Oberlauf des Allier seinen Weg durch das südliche Velay. Brioude, diese weit über 1000 Jahre alte Stadt, ist quirlig und hat ein reichhaltiges, architektonisches Erbe mit netten Gassen und Plätzen. Die romanische Basilika Saint-Julien ist ein Kleinod. Für die Fresken im Innernen sollte man getrost einen steifen Nacken riskieren. Brioude ist das Zentrum der Lachsbeobachtung. In früheren Jahrhunderten wimmelte es von Lachsen am Oberlauf des Allier. Doch die vielen Staudämme forderten ihren Tribut. Am Nachmittag radeln wir auf einem kleinen Sträßchen entlang des Allier bis zum malerischen Salzuit.

We receive our bicycles 20 km outside of Clermont Ferrand. Here the upper course of the Allier pines its way through the southern Velay. Brioude, the more than 1000 year old city, is lively and has a rich, architectural heritage with nice streets and squares. A special treasure is the 1000 year old Roman Basilica Saint-Julien. For admiring the frescos inside it is worth risking a stiff neck. Brioude is also the center of the salmon observation. The river Allier was alive with salmon in the old days. Due to hydropower plants and damms, the salmon population got decimates massively. In the afternoon we will roll along pituresque streets high above the river Allier towads Salzuit.

Day 3: Salzuit - Le Puy-en-Velay

Unser Ziel am heutigen Vormittag ist das Schloss Lafayette. Wir erreichen es über kleine Straßen, die durch die landwirtschaftlich geprägte Gegend führen. Hier weiden die Rinder, die das bekannte "Fin gras" Rindfleisch liefern und die Schafe die den Käse der Auvergne so bekannt gemacht haben. Wir radeln entlang der Allier Schlucht, die teilweise mehrere hundert Meter tief, canyonartig in die Hochflächen eingeschnitten ist. Dann müssen wir den Fluss verlassen, einzig der Touristenzug fährt durch die enge Schlucht. Langeac ist ein authentischer Marktflecken am Allier. Le Puy – das heißt der Gipfel – fesselt mit seinen eigenartigen Felsnadeln, um die sich viele Legenden spinnen. Wir sind im Zentralmassiv, die Landschaft ist vulkanisch, geprägt von sanften Hügeln, Heidelandschaften, Waldarealen und Weidehochflächen. Le Puy-en-Velay die „Toskana Frankreichs“ ist unser heutiges Tagesziel

Rolling hills, green meadows and quiteness acompanies us to the Lafayette castle. We are cycling along the river Allier this morning.We cycle along the partially several hundred meters deep Allier gorge which is dramatically cut into the surrounding plateau.  Then we have to leave the river, as only the tourist train drives through the narrow ravine. Langeac is an authentic market spot on the Allier. Le Puy, meaning the summit, dazzles us with its peculiar rocky needles and many interesting legends. We are in the Central Massif. The landscape is volcanic and characterized by gentle hills, forests and pastures. Le Puy-en-Velay the "Tuscany of France" is today's destination.

Day 4: Le Puy-en-Velay - Peyre en Aubrac

Today's stage takes us to the isolated plains of the Margeride and the southern volcanic complexes of the Auvergne. Hard cheese, the Tomme, honey and herbs are offered in the local markets. The kitchen is very substantial. The flora of the natural highlands is definitely worth seeing. Saugues lies in a gentile valley just as described in the play 'La Bete du Gevaudan'. Afterwards we have a bit a climb until we can relax in Bigose, our today destination.

Unsere heutige Etappe führt uns auf die einsamen Hochflächen der Margeride und die südlichen Vulkankomplexe der Auvergne. Hartkäse, der Tomme, Honig und Kräuter werden auf den Märkten angeboten. Die Küche ist deftig, die Flora der naturbelassenen Hochwiesen ist wirklich sehenswert. Ganz im Zeichen der Bestie, „La Bete du Gevaudan“ liegt Saugues in einem sanften Tal. Danach geht es noch einmal bergan bis wir unser heutiges Ziel Bigose erreichen.

Day 5: Peyre en Aubrac - Laguiole

The solitary mid-mountain landscape of the Margeride massif now transforms into the region of the southernmost volcano of the Auvergne, the Aubrac plateau.  

Laguiole, our destination for today, is the center of blacksmiths.  A manufactory is located directly at the village entrance. Here we can watch blacksmiths going about their work. The most typical dish of the Aubrac is "Aligot". You should try it.

Nahezu unmerklich geht die einsame Mittelgebirgslandschaft des Margeride-Massivs über in die Region der Aubrac Hochebene.Die trutzigen Häuser aus grauem Basaltstein zeigen die jahrhundertealte Architektur der Region.

Laguiole, unser Ziel für heute, ist das Zentrum der Messerschmiede. Eine Manufaktur liegt direkt am Ortseingang. Hier können wir den Schmieden bei der Arbeit über die Schulter schauen. Ein typisches Gericht des Aubrac ist das Aligot, das sie nicht versäumen sollten zu probieren.

Day 6: Laguiole - Vieillevie

Ein herrlicher Fahrtag liegt vor uns. In der Früh werden wir die Gelegenheit bei der Herstellung des "Tome" dabei zu sein. Danach verlassen wir Laguiole über kleine Sträßchen. Auf den Weidehochflächen grasen die bekannten Aubrac-Rinder. Die Landschaft ist uns ans Herz gewachsen. Fast fällt es ein wenig schwer Abschied zu nehmen. Wir rollen zuerst hinunter in die Schlucht des Truyere bevor wir auf den Lot treffen.

"Le premier sourire du Midi”, das erste Lächeln des Südens, so nannten die Jakobspilger das Tal des Lot. Authentische Dörfer, mittelalterliche Burgen, romanische Kirchen, historische Stadtkerne prägen den heutigen Tag. 

A beautiful cycling day is ahead of us. In the morning we got the chance to visit a "fromagerie", where the "Tome" is produced. Afterwards we`ll leave Laguiol on small farm roads.The well-known Aubrac cattle graze on the pastures. It is nearly a bit hard to say good-bye to this beautiful landscape. We first roll down into the gorge of the Truyère before we reach the Lot.

The pilgrims called the valley of the Lot “Le premier sourire du Midi” – ‘The first smile of the South’.  Authentic villages, medieval castles, Romanesque churches, historic town centers characterize this day. 

Day 7: Viellevie - Figeac

Along the Lot we more westward. Tasty wines thrive at the Riverside. The river was an important transport route linking the Auvergne and Cahors to the wine trade centres of Bordeaux. We reach Conques, which lies hidden in a side valley of the Lot. Nonetheless it is known for its Abbatiale Ste-Foy, an impressive church-historical work of art. When we see the mysterious, brickes pillars on the hills of Figeac, we have almost arrived at our next destination.

Entlang des Lot bewegen wir uns westwärts. Kräftige Weine gedeihen an den Flusshängen. Der Fluss war eine wichtige Verkehrsader, die die Auvergne und Cahors mit den Weinhandelszentren von Bordeaux verband. Schwer zugänglich, in einem Seitental  des Lot, erreichen wir Conques, bekannt für seine Abbatiale Ste-Foy, ein kirchengeschichtliches Kunstwerk, das seinesgleichen sucht. Wenn wir die geheimnisvollen, gemauerten Säulen auf den Hügeln von Figeac erblicken, sind wir fast am Ziel.

Day 8: Figeac - Rocamadour

After a heavy thunderstorm during the night,  it cleared up in the morning. We're so happy to hop on our bikes again! Today we cross the Perigord,  one of the most beautiful landscapes in France. The village of Rocamadour is located on a sheer limestone rock. 216 steps lead up to the forecourt of the church and the famous black madonna. 

Nach einem heftigen Gewitter in det Nacht klart es am Morgen wieder auf. Wir sind glücklich,  wieder loszuradeln! Heute führt unser Weg durch das Perigord, eines der schönsten Landschaften Frankreichs. Rocamadour liegt an einem riesigen Felsen. 216 Stufen führen zur berühmten Kirche und der schwarzen Madonna hinauf.

Day 9: Rocamadour - Aurillac

We reach the Cantal. This region is famous for its Cantal cheese. A hard cheese with delicious taste. Cycling towards Aurillac,  we approach the Monts du Cantal,  the remains of an enormous volcano. It spreads its basaltic lava within a radius of 70 km creating bizarre forms of basalt organs and towers.

Wir erreichen das Cantal. Diese Region ist berühmt für den Cantal Käse, ein Hartkäse mit besonders würzigem Geschmack. Wir radeln Richtung Aurillac mit den Cantal-Bergen im Hintergrund. Dies sind die Überreste eines enormen Vulkans der einst hier die Landschaft formte und im Umkreis von 70 km bizarre Formen entstehen ließ  

Day 10: Aurillac - Clermont-Ferrand

To the north of Aurillac, the river Jordan winds its way through the Valle de Mandailles. We get closer to Puy Mary, the so-called "Pyramid of the Auvergne". Is it really our last day?

Nördlich von Aurillac schlängelt sich das Flüsschen Jordanne und hat das Valle de Mandailles in das Vulkangestein geschnitten. Wir nähern uns der “Pyramide der Auvergne” dem Puy Mary. Ist es wirklich schon der letzte Tag?
