Perfect way to see Norway´s Fjords
15 Feb 2018
If you are wondering what a Fjord is, let me give you a little introduction to this nature’s delight.
A fjord is a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs on three sides created by a glacier. A true Fjord, as you may call it, is formed when a glacier cuts a U-shaped valley by ice segregation of the surrounding bedrock.
The fjords are connected to the sea and the opening towards the sea is called the mouth of the fjords. This U-shaped valley is often surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.
Scoresby Sund, the longest fjord in the world is situated in Greenland and is 350 km long. The next two spots are bagged by Sognefjord (203 km), and the Hardangerfjord (179 km), both situated in Western Norway region.
The west Norway fjord landscape is mystically beautiful and is included in UNESCO’s prestigious World Heritage list.
There are many ways to explore this spectacular place to your heart’s content. On dry land, you can explore on foot, by car or on a bike.
Bergen is considered the gateway to the fjords and once you reach here you can either go north or south to explore the many beautiful islands.

Exploring the fjords on a bike journey is a total different experience. The fantastic roads and the splendid scenery makes it worthwhile.
This place is a paradise for riding and sightseeing. The roads at some places can be a little challenging as two-thirds of the country is mountainous with lots of hairpin bends.
But if you are prepared for a viking kind of an adventure then exploring fjords on a bike is a must for you. The Norwegian fjords are loaded with multiple trails suitable for people with different levels of fitness.
The spectacular train journey is another amazing option if you love exploring nature. The main Norwegian bike lines offers a trip through some of the most beautiful national parks, valleys, waterfalls and majestic mountains.
There are as well fabulous hiking and biking terrains along the fjords, from a barren glacial landscape and majestic peaks to lush green national parks and forests.
One of the highlights to exploring fjords landscapes opened in May last year, this skylift takes you to the top of Mt Hoven (1,011 m) in just five minutes. The restaurant at the top gives you a spectacular 210-degree panoramic view overlooking Mt. Skåla and lake Lovatnet in the east, Jostedalsbreen glacier and Olden in the south, and the Nordfjord in the west.
These fjords have everything that an adventurous heart desires for.
